Coping with Christmas

Please note, Coping with Christmas is for parents and carers who have been caring for a loved one with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and/or binge eating disorder for less than five years.

Learning Outcomes

Throughout the course, you’ll gain an understanding of:

  • The services Beat can offer.
  • Eating disorders and the “big feelings” cycle.
  • Why Christmas can be difficult and potential worries and concerns.
  • The importance of looking after yourself; exploring the effects of stress and ways to look after your own wellbeing when supporting a loved one.
  • The importance of active listening and communication skills.
  • How to prepare for the Christmas period, taking a collaborative approach with your loved one, tips and strategies if things don’t go to plan, being flexible.
  • The support available from Beat over the festive period.

Christmas can be a difficult time of year for people with eating disorders and their loved ones too, and this year we are having to adjust to the pandemic and lots of uncertainty and change, which could potentially be adding to families’ worries. We hope by attending Beat’s Coping with Christmas training you will be able to take away tips and strategies to manage the festive period and to believe that celebrating the festive period together is possible. Beat’s Coping with Christmas workshop will enable parents, carers, partners, friends and family to enjoy the holiday season with their loved one.

Course Structure

Coping with Christmas is delivered digitally by an experienced clinician over two sessions; it is hoped that you are able to attend both sessions. The training will help carers to address their hopes and fears about Christmas, identify potential triggers and make a collaborative plan with their loved one.
