Nexus is a new telephone support service for parents, siblings, partners, and others caring for a loved one who has an eating disorder. Through Nexus, you’ll be able to connect each week with a trained Beat advisor, who’ll provide you with a place to talk through what you’re going through and empower you to help your loved one towards positive change.
The programme is based on Professor Janet Treasure’s book Skills-based Learning for Caring for a Loved One with an Eating Disorder: The New Maudsley Method. We will post a free copy of the book to you so you can refer to it as you put the skills you’re learning into practice.
Nexus runs in London, and we are running a limited trial across the rest of the UK.
Nexus is currently full but you can still register your interest here for when we have spaces again.
Nexus is a coaching service. The aim isn’t to tell you what you should be doing, but for you and your assigned advisor to develop a safe, confidential and supportive space where your advisor will act as a sounding board, guiding you to finding your own solutions as well as offering practical techniques to help motivate positive change in your loved one.
Once you’ve signed up, you’ll have an initial call with your Nexus advisor about your experiences so that the advisor can gain an understanding of your situation. During each call, your advisor will discuss with you any goals you’d like to set, whether that’s trying a particular communication skill with your loved one or finding half an hour for some important self-care.
Nexus is for parents, partners, siblings, and other carers of a loved one with an eating disorder.
After your first call, you’ll speak to your advisor on the phone at the same time each week. The total length of the programme is 12 weeks. You’ll need to be available for a 50-minute phone call in the first week, then a 40-minute call each week.
Generally, calls will take place at the same time each week. However, we do understand that this isn’t always going to be possible, so you can rearrange a call up to three times.
