Generative AI and Eating Disorders

Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, are becoming increasingly common, and people affected by eating disorders may use them to find information, ask questions or seek support. While AI can be a helpful starting point, it is important to be aware of the potential risks - the information provided is not always accurate or appropriate and may sometimes reinforce unhelpful thoughts and behaviours around food, exercise, weight and body image.

AI should never replace professional advice, treatment or support from someone you trust. If you think you have an eating disorder or are worried about your relationship with food, your body image, or your exercise habits, we recommend contacting your GP as they’ll be responsible for your initial diagnosis and should help to coordinate your care, at least in the early stages of treatment. If they determine you may have an eating disorder, they should refer you to an eating disorders specialist or your local eating disorder service.

It is important to check the information AI provides, be mindful of sharing personal information and remember that recovery is possible with the right help and support.

You can learn more about generative AI and eating disorders via CoRE-ED's factsheet, which explains more about how generative AI tools can be helpful for people experiencing eating disorders, disordered eating or body image concerns, but also highlights the potential risks.
